  • Hair Expo 2017 Wrap Up

With the growth of Australian hairdressing always top of mind, Haircare Australia views Hair Expo as an integral platform to inform, inspire and unite the industry - not only with a powerful stead of products and professionals - but with one another.

Occupying prime position on the exhibition floor, showcasing brands including Olaplex, BaByliss, Verb and Fabuloso Pro for customised coloured conditioners, Haircare welcomed record numbers in traffic and activity. Enjoying the opportunity to chat trials and triumphs with valued clientele and always taking the chance to listen and take on board valued feedback.

It was over in the education rooms however where the culture and influence of the company truly made its impact; hundreds of delegates walking away with fresh perspectives and technical insights as delivered by the likes of Guy Tang, The Schorem Barbers and Jules Tognini.

First to the stage was the much anticipated Freevo show. Hosting a line-up of Evo’s most influential artists in Lauren McCowan, Jules Tognini and Leonard Newton, the audience enjoyed the usual and always hilarious banter while consuming colour and creativity otherwise untold.

    Hair Expo Freevo

“We ultimately wanted the audience to walk away with the understanding that there are so many interpretations of what makes something cool, beautiful and modern. And this is the whole idea of the Freevo campaign - don’t be defined by what other people tell you, you should be,” said Lauren.

Lauren presented an intricate, ghetto inspired braided style followed by a shaved head adorned with bright-red hair balls fastened randomly and with ample effect. Lauren’s classic up-do made a statement before a blue-green wedge (wig) lifted to reveal yet another trending buzz cut.

A stand out from Lauren’s repertoire was a pastel rose gold-peach style on which the Creative Director glued a rainbow of precoloured finger waves.

“We coloured each weft with a custom Fab Pro mixation before soaking with Evo Gangsta Grip and finally layering with Evo Helmut Strong Hairspray. We did this on individual pieces of mesh and allowed them to set overnight. Now I’m sticking them on with eyelash glue which can be easily removed with Evo Love Touch Shine Spray,” divulged Lauren.

Leonard created a shoulder-length precision bob with a lick of blue and a subtle-yet striking triangle detail through the front, inspired by the Harajuku kids, the style was effortlessly cool and ready to walk from salon to street.

Working with the Evo Tyler Teasing Brush, Leonard demonstrated a series of universal techniques including back combing, back brushing and layering of product such as Evo Helmut Strong Hairspray, “for a glass like effect.”

While Lauren continued to illustrate the secrets to being a ‘360 degree hairdresser,’ Jules took to the stage with a vibrant copper canvas ready for reshaping.

“I want to create this restyle in real salon circumstances, without prep and with standard time limits,” started Jules. Borrowing from Milla Jovovich in Fifth Element, Jules travelled his cut from bulky to textured and youthful, working to materialise his model’s wicked personality, as well as his own.

“Freevo is less about being dictated-to by products or a corporate juggernaut and more about being a part of something. Hair shouldn’t be about a collection, or what’s hip and trending, it should be an expression of yourself and your client,” said Jules. But this should never deflect a great haircut. “Evo is never going to even out a bob or fix a haircut, but if you do a good haircut it will have your back, push and drive the style,” he said.

Jay was the genius behind the shifting colour palette, calling on his latest accomplice, Evo Fab Pro Black to create new, unseen levels of pastel.

“The current Fab Pro palette is the colour wheel, for example the chocolate exists at a level 5, and with the addition of black, this will help to add depth and achieve really dark dual-tones; beautiful deep pastels and greys,” said Jay.

“Especially as a semi-permanent, Evo Fab Pro Black is great to deepen and refresh darker tones, it’s really going to open up the capabilities of Fab Pro, in particular for cool interesting pastels,” commented Lauren.

    Schorem Barbers

Next to the spotlight were the world’s favourite barbers and creators of Reuzel, Leen and Bertus aka The Schorem Barbers.

The pair credited Vidal Sassoon as a hero inspiration, “because he changed the way we look at hair, he taught us to treat hair like a unique product, and that’s how we cut hair,” shared Bertus.

“We look at the natural fall of hair and see every person who walks into the shop as an individual, there are 8 billion people in the world, and they each have different hair.”

    Hair Expo Schorem

Bertus believes every product that is custom made for someone will fall correctly and made a metaphor from the tailored jacket. “When you travel with a customised jacket, and it’s been stuffed and pulled in and out of a backpack, and then you finally pull it out and put it on, it always falls correctly.”

Bertus translated this to clipper work, and encouraged the room to look at clippers as “a whole lot of scissors with a cord.” He educated on setting a baseline to secure length around the perimeter and how to use your body as a tool, always keeping the sternum right behind your work for 90 degree angles every time.

With the right angle on-side, The Schorem Barbers believe the most important area of the head (as it pertains to men’s hair) is where the ear is attached.

“You can shave everything forward or back from that point and it will look good,” said Bertus. A suggestion well and truly proved on-stage in a series of perfect pompadours fusing James Dean and Elvis, 2017-style.

Lastly, the lads advised on creating men’s hair to be proud of, a notion that shines from their persona to their product line, Reuzel.

“Try and do at least one haircut a day that you can be really proud of. Every time you give a client the best haircut possible, you give a little bit of yourself away, so don’t forget to be good to ‘you,’” said Bertus.

    Guy Tang for Olaplex

Further raising the spirits of Australian hairdressers was Instagram sensation and instigator of the global ‘Hair Besties Community,’ Guy Tang.

Back by popular demand, the hair colour hero presented a series of shimmering colour delicacies from rose gold to lilac and silver, each dissected with that addictive language symbiotic of Tang and his fans around the world.

    Hair Expo Guy Tang

Followed for his hair colour transformations and peerless pastels, Guy is all too familiar with ‘fear of the fade,’ and spoke about the importance of educating clients on expecting and enjoying the inevitable process. “I don’t know why everyone is so scared of fading, everything fades - life fades. My advice is to educate your clients accordingly, and don’t use the word fade, use the word evolve, ‘evolving into a beautiful smoky beige colour.’”

Guy believes toning on dry hair creates a more seamless result (as water molecules occupy the hair shaft) and encouraged his audience to up-sell the service.

“Call it glazing, dry-glossing or top-coating, it’s so important to tone on dry hair so if it’s a process that uses more time for a better result, then charge for it. It’s a service your clients will love as they will see you’re taking more time with them,” he said.

Big on under-promising and over-delivering, not a colour passes through Guy’s hands without the Olaplex touch, in particular when working with those harder to achieve tones such as silver. Guy reinforced the less is more approach with Olaplex, asking colourists to use only the specified amount as “it has a pH of 3.5, it’s very acidic.”

    Caterina Di Biase for Denman

    Hair Expo Caterina Di Biase

And, last to take the stage was two time Hair Expo Australian Hairdresser of the Year and two-time AHFA Hairdresser of the Year, Caterina Di Biase, enforcing the point that excellent prep forms the basis for key artistic editorial work. Caterina took to the stage. With the assistance of her Heading Out Creative Team, Caterina disseminated and reconstructed some of her key editorial looks for the crowd, sharing with them how she employs classic hairdresser’s tools, such as a Denman 7-row brush, to work and dress the hair prior to styling. Even simple tricks, like using different coloured cutting combs to provide contrast against light or dark hair can take away some of the guesswork and valuable time behind the scenes. The secret to success, according to Caterina, is combining the right brushes and tools to help bring the stylist’s vision to life.

    Sharon Blain for BaByliss

Hair Expo revellers were treated to daily demonstrations by the Queen of long hair styling, Sharon Blain, over at the BaByliss exhibition stand. Hairdressing royalty Sharon Blain claimed her throne as the Queen of long hair styling with daily hair demonstrations. Drawing in a keen crowd, Sharon captivated her audience as she shared some of her creative and inventive techniques using the BaByliss portfolio of tools, finishing her looks with the use of threading ribbons for styles that wowed.

After a jam-packed weekend, Haircare Australia is fondly reflecting on their mission to inform, inspire and unite the industry. Now, until next year!

  • Olaplex No. 2 Back Bar | Mini Treatments

No2-Olaplex-BackbarOlaplex is not just for colour clients!

Olaplex No. 2 Backbar can also be used in a range of ways on virgin or chemically treated hair to repair and protect. Discover how to implement the Olaplex Express Backbar Mini Treatment and uncover a range of other Olaplex No. 2 Backbar applications below.

Grow your salon business with Olaplex. Use Olaplex No. 2 on every client, every service.

    1. Express Backbar Mini Treatment

With the 2000ml back bar dispenser of Olaplex No. 2 Bond Perfector, your salon is able to perform express treatments. These treatments should take at least 10 minutes and can be utilised as an easy up-sell for your clients.

    1. Apply a generous amount to the hair. You want to use more Olaplex No. 2 Bond Perfector than you would a normal application of conditioner – the hair should feel extremely saturated.

    2. Comb through the hair. This additionally serves as a great detangler.

    3. Allow a minimum of 10 minutes processing time. The longer that Olaplex No. 2 Bond Perfector is left in the hair, the more effective it will be.

    4. Rinse, shampoo and condition as normal. Add moisture and/or protein as required by the hair.

Benefits of an Express Back Bar Mini Stand-Alone Treatment:

    • Quickly and easy service to perform in between chemical services or while undertaking a drastic colour change.
    • Builds and repairs bonds in damaged hair to restore the integrity of your client’s hair.
    • Reduces porosity of your client’s hair to make their colour last longer and prevent fading.
    • Increases elasticity of your client’s hair and restores client’s hair to its natural state.

    2. Cutting Lotion

Save even more time by using Olaplex No. 2 as a cutting lotion when you are doing a mini treatment as above. Simply offer as an add-on to their cut and blow-dry.

TOP TIP: Don’t forget to always shampoo and condition before drying/styling.

    3. Detangle

After backcombing, rinsing highlights, or simply with tangled or hard to manage hair, you can apply Olaplex No. 2 to detangle for ease of future colour application or cutting. Olaplex is great for taming unmanageable hair and preventing tangles.

TOP TIP: This is also great for children – apply a quick Olaplex treatment to tame ratty, unmanageable hair.

    4. Boost Natural Curl

By increasing elasticity, Olaplex can take your client back to their natural texture and elasticity. Use mini treatments of No. 2 to reform lost curls on over-processed hair.

TOP TIP: You can even use a small amount of Olaplex No. 2 as a leave-in and blow dry into the hair.

    5. Soften Wiry, Grey Hair

Utilising Olaplex No. 2 to soften wiry, grey hair is a perfect way to offer to even more clients who may not have colour or chemical services. Simply perform the express mini treatment as above.

    6. Beard Treatment

Apply on cleansed beard with mascara wand to ensure it does not contact skin. Avoid areas around lips and mouth, saturate with No. 2. Let sit 15 minutes, rinse, shampoo, and condition.

  • Salon Feature: The Nest Hair Boutique

A place where all things grow, the Nest Hair Boutique is the perfect blend of creativity, consistency and care.

Dreamer and “ideas girl”, Charlie, had a vision… to create a salon where customers can unwind and actually enjoy getting their hair done. An experience that’s not awkward, rushed or intimidating. But full of warmth, energy and new friendships. The Nest, is as charming as the name suggests, with a striped baby blue wall, rustic hanging lights, vintage furniture, and flower pots. Essentially, The Nest is as individual as the women that walk through their doors.

    So, who inspires you, Charlie?

My stylists, of course… and I’m not just saying that. The passion these girls have… the way their eyes light up when they’ve created something beautiful… it’s more inspiring for me than watching a big league hairdresser, any day. When I know my team is happy and passionate in their work, it really drives me to develop the best environment for all of us to be creative in...

What does your salon do, that’s different?

Lots of things! From yoga, in-salon pop-up shops, creative outings or, my favourite at the moment, ‘The History of Hairdressing’ classes… we’re pretty much always doing something out of the norm.

Okay, what is the one piece of advice you always give your clients?

Take advantage of free consultations, before your appointment day. Free consultations are available from most salons to put you at ease, choose colours, styles and set your budget. You’ll also get a feel for the salon to make sure it matches the style you’re going for – and the experience you’re after.

What’s your favourite Lakmé product? And, why?

Gloss! It's ammonia free, toning is quick, the shine is incredible… and we love how intense the colours are for toning. It’s made toning more creative… and the possibilities are endless. One of my favourite toners for softening roots after foiling is 15g 8/00 + 10g Silver +2g 8/22.

What do you think you’ll be seeing more of in 2016?

My bet is… we’re going to continue with these beautiful natural looks, using a lot of freehand techniques. But, we’ll be introducing more rich browns with warm reflects, bronde, soft coppers and golden goddess tones. This will be interesting to see… because Australians are terrified of red heads, but nobody knows why! We’ll start to see people dipping toes in something a little different, which gives us colourists the chance to have a lot more fun!

Charlie, what advice would you give to someone wanting to open their own salon?

Start with ‘why’. Why do you want to open your own business? If it’s, ‘I want to make my own hours and make a lot of money’… think again. Running a salon is - at least - twice the work you’re expecting… and it’s definitely not a get-rich-quick plan. You need entrepreneurial qualities to run a business. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, that’s for sure. But, if you love it, that can make it work. And, then it’s totally worth it.

  • Salon Feature: Organika Hair

Exceptional hair. No compromises. These aren’t just words for Sarah and Lisa, the co-owners at Organika Hair.

Swapping sulphate, paraben, gluten, chloride and phthalate for only natural and organic products, Organika Hair is like the Birkenstock wearing, gluten-free hipster – stylish, with an environmental conscience. Sit back with a drink, relax... guilt-free!

Ladies, why do you have such a strong environmental focus in salon?

It’s a lifestyle choice. A healthy body, a healthy mind, a healthy planet. It’s all linked. We believe you don’t have to compromise your health for great hair, in fact, we know you don’t have to.

Lisa, who inspired you to open a salon like Organika?

I worked in a salon for 10 years before Organika. That’s when, I discovered my beliefs and lifestyle were a contradiction to my work. I was living a green life at home, but the moment I walked into work everyday, I was exposed to all of the toxins. It just didn’t feel right using them on clients either.

What do you love about the Neuma range?

This range embodies everything we stand for. It always delivers results, without the compromise. It's leading the way in healthy
    products that actually work. It’s a win-win!

How has being a Prestige Partner impacted you, Lisa? Would you recommend it?

Being a Prestige Partner has given me the opportunity to be involved in all the amazing events. The trip to Hobart in August 2015 at MONA
was a standout. I’d certainly recommend this initiative.

    Who inspires Organika the most?

Our clients... and I’m not just saying that. They really are the ones who keep us motivated to do better, everyday. We love hearing about their lives, getting to know each and every one, and hopefully making a difference in the way they feel.

So, what gets Sarah out of bed each morning?

Making clients feel amazing about themselves. And the look in their eyes as they walk out of the salon, knowing they look fabulous. Best of all, doing this without putting any harmful chemicals on their body. Oh, and I can’t forget my beautiful, nine month old son, Roman. He has a special knack for getting me up very early in the morning. He’s my personal alarm clock!

What are Organika’s goals for 2016?

Maybe another Organika salon – interstate this time! Exciting times ahead for the Organika team.

Okay, knowing what you know now, if you could go back in time, what‘s the one piece of advice you’d give yourself?

Always, always, always... trust your instincts. I think there’s a part of you that truly knows what’s best for you. Often, we just don’t listen to it. Follow that inner voice.

  • Olaplex vs Colorphlex: Olaplex Tested Again

Since Olaplex revolutionised the hair industry in January 2015, a number of products have been released spuriously claiming to achieve results similar Olaplex.

We can say confidently that despite these claims, none have the same unique, patented chemistry that allows Olaplex to repair and rebuild the bonds in damaged hair. That simply means that none are able to repair hair that has been damaged by chemical, heat or mechanical means.

But don’t take our word for it. The highly respected and fiercely independent American Board of Certified Hair Colorists recently performed their own tests to compare Olaplex with colorpHlex and b3 Brazilian Bond Builder.

To perform the test, the Board bleached four identical hair swatches with Blondor and 40 volume for 50 minutes, for maximum effect, with each manufacturer’s instructions being followed precisely. The comparison photograph below was taken after four shampoos, with colorpHlex on the left, followed by mineral oil, b3 Brazilian Bond Builder and finally Olaplex on the right.

Olaplex Comparison - Olaplex vs Colorphlex Vs Brazilian Bond Builder

After comparing Olaplex with colorpHlex, mineral oil and B3 Brazilian Bond Builder the review of the ABCC was as follows:

“But after the fourth shampoo, it was clear that the other products were not holding up and seemed to prove to be nothing more than oil and silicone. They were only temporarily coating the hair thus creating an immediate shine, but unable to build or link broken bonds with any degree of quality. The hair felt dry and fragile. At best, they would be better served to call it an additive for shine. Anything more is a far stretch of the imagination. The Olaplex sample maintained its integrity and was the clear winner. We also performed similar tests on live models and Olaplex was always noticeably and significantly superior. The more compromised the hair was, the more Olaplex outperformed the rest.”

The results are clear. What does this mean for your salon? Well, if you’re on the fence, we encourage you to try out your own swatch test, conduct your own review and compare the results for yourself!

  • Olaplex Repairs Kim Kardashian's Blonde Hair Damage

Kim Kardashian's sudden swap to blonde for Paris Fashion Week earlier in the year had the world talking. Five months on, it's the integrity of Kim's locks  on everyone's lips. In what has to be the hair transformation of 2015, Kim went for a dark brown to platinum blonde and surprised us all!  However, the news that really shocked us was that her colourists performed this transformation WITHOUT  using the one and only proven form of blonde insurance, Olaplex.  Thankfully, Kim has now discovered Olaplex and  is loving the results.

    Kim's Platinum Hair Transformation

    Kim Kardashian Hair Transformation

Kim's dramatic transformation was the result of a six hour in-salon session.  To perform a one-sitting colour transformation like Kim's is risky business. To maintain the colour for her month-long blonde stint, Kim underwent three colouring services which only added to the damage.

After the third process, photo's emerged of Kim with dishevelled, dry-looking locks. Not long after this, Kim went back to her dark roots and although they act as a good disguise,  Kim has confirmed that her hair is in the worst condition is has been.

In a recent interview Kim announced that she has now been introduced to Olaplex and uses it to help rebuild the damage caused by her harsh bleaching. She maintains that she has seen dramatic results with Olaplex and it's working to  improve her hair and get it back to it's once healthy condition. Kim suggests sleeping with Olaplex No.3 in her hair* and is seeing stronger, healthier hair as a result.

Kim Kardashian Olaplex Hair Transformation*Please note, using Olaplex No. 3 overnight is Kim's personal tip.  Although our recommendation is to use for 10 minutes or longer, we have received great feedback from clients who slept with the product in overnight.

Kim Karadashian's Damaged Blonde Hair Pre-Olaplex

Olaplex Reverses Kim Kardashians Blonde Hair Damage

Going from any colour to platinum blonde involves serious work and we recommend that changes like this be be performed over a period of time with regular Olaplex treatments during and in-between services.

Celebrity colourist, Tracey Cunningham has a host of long-standing celebrity clientèle on her books, including Kim's sister Khloe Kardashian (and now Kim), has sworn to never colour a client's hair without Olaplex. Her Facebook page speaks for itself with the results she's achieving. As thousands of colourists around the globe stand by Olaplex, it's stories like that of Kim Karadashians blonde hair damage  that demonstrate just how important it is to use, not only during lightening but also as a stand-alone treatment for already compromised hair.

Kim Reveals how Olaplex is saving her damaged hair.

It's not just Kim Kardashian embracing the power of Olaplex, people around the world can't get enough of Olaplex and it's ability to colour and lighten hair without damage and breakage. Our friends at The Glow, Pop Sugar and Oz Beauty Expert have all jumped on board and are loving the results.

  • No More Hair Breakage with Olaplex

As most of us know, the age old problem with colouring hair is that no matter how healthy the hair is, breakage can still occur, especially when trying to go lighter. This worry is now just that; an old problem. The solution is here, it’s called Olaplex and it could just be the Holy Grail of hair colouring. This revolutionary product allows your hair to be coloured or lightened at any level without any breakage whatsoever. To never break hair again is a huge claim, but we’ve seen and heard from some of the biggest names in the industry, that it really does work.

    What makes Olaplex so special?

Olaplex  truly is different, it has two of the world’s leading PHD’s in Materials and Chemistry that had never worked on hair products before, Dr. Eric Pressly and Dr. Craig Hawker. With their fresh outlook, this dream team invented a single ingredient, that is free of silicone or oils, that links broken bonds in the hair during and after chemical services making them stronger than they were before. It may all sound like the same old mumbo jumbo, but check out what top colourists are saying about Olaplex all over social media (#olaplex). As they say, the proof is in the pudding.

“If you have ever had clients who worry about their hair breaking off from the colouring process, tell the, ‘don’t worry, I use Olaplex. Not only does it help prevent breakage, my clients tell me that their hair feels stronger, silky and fuller. This is a brand new hair care product unlike any other, and it makes my job a hell of a lot less stressful.” – Tracey Cunningham

Olaplex works with all manufacture's formulas

All lightener and colour is designed to break bonds in the hair. If you’re not breaking bonds, you can’t lift or deposit colour. Olaplex multiplies and rebuilds those bonds stronger than they were before.

    It’s no hassle to use

You just add Olaplex Bond Multiplier directly into colour or lightener then add the Bond Perfector after your rinse . The client takes the Hair Perfector No. 3 home as part of the professional service to use once a week.

    Works on every clients hair

Olaplex has been tested on virtually every hair type and it works. Asian, Caucasian, African American, previously chemically processed and virgin. There are no ends to it’s talent.
