  • Haircare Australia Social Media Enlightenment

An insider’s guide to how far you can push social media in the lead up to Christmas (and beyond).

Social media specialist agency, Tiger Pistol shares with us more than just a few audience rousing tips and tricks to tantalise your clients coming into the Christmas period, along with important insight into the future of the social media landscape.

    @telleish_hair_studio @studiobhaircolourists @_edwardsandco
    @hairandharlow @haircareaust @haircareaust

“Christmas is an incredibly competitive period in the retail space, so be prepared to spend a little more on Social Media platforms to get cutthrough”, advises Abhinav Ramachandran who works at Tiger Pistol.

“Don’t underestimate the power of your customer database. Assuming you have your clients’ email addresses and phone numbers on file (and if you don’t, it’s never too late to start!), plus Facebook’s retargeting abilities are second-to-none. This is a great way to reach your loyal clients and target them with specials and offers, especially during high-demand periods such as Christmas,” Abhi added.

Do Christmas competitions or special holiday offers work? “The short answer is yes. Think about competitions that will get people into your salon, generate more content, and align to your objectives. A competition should provide value to the audience, but also to your business. Try offering a unique experience that will enrich a customer’s experience rather than merely giving away products”.

Abhi says to think about ways to lower the barrier of entry too, because the objective is to gain as many entries as possible. “People love competitions, but it’s important to understand the value of the prize versus the effort to enter. A great mechanic is a friends/bestie pack or pamper pack - it encourages users to tag friends while extending the organic reach of your post.”

It is important to understand the Social Media Landscape so that you can stay on top. In the social game things are always changing. Abhi took a moment to ponder on the future of the social media landscape. It looks like we’ve got quite a journey ahead of us, so buckle up!

Abhi explains, “The rate at which the social media landscape changes is phenomenal. Think about how quickly we have moved from text, to still images, to video on Facebook - next up, Virtual and Augmented Reality!” As a Facebook Marketing Partner, Tiger Pistol has insight and access to cool new products and offerings on the social media horizon.

Gone are the days where organic content would be seen by your entire audience. In fact, organic reach is steadily declining and running ad campaigns for your business has never been more important. But it doesn’t need to be expensive.

“Social Media platforms are pay to play platforms. Luckily, Facebook has ad products to suit every objective, and you can start with very minimal budget to reach prospective customers through their robust targeting capabilities. Focus on reaching the right people at the right time, with an engaging message,” said Abhi.

Which is good news if you want to grow but budgets are already feeling tight! Plus unpaid content, according to Abhi, may only reach 2% of your existing audience. “You spend a lot of time generating great content so it’s worth supporting it with ad spend to maximise reach of the post. Remember, users don’t have to follow your brand to be served your ads,” he said.

    Top Tiger Pistol Tips

Here are Tiger Pistol’s surefire social tips that you (and your customers) can’t ignore! And Tiger Pistol should know. Their proprietary technology platform services over 30,000 businesses each month. Which makes them the largest third-party publisher of Facebook and Instagram ads in the world.

    Feature Your Work

Showcase your hairdressing skills and what you have to offer. Beautiful hair and transformation shots do well. Highlight current trends and stay top of mind with your clients.

    Sneak Peaks

Serve up some behind the scenes snippets from the salon and what you get up to on a day-to-day basis. This builds brand resonance, as your audience sees you as relatable.

    Hashtags

Consider what platform you’re posting on – hashtags are relevant for Instagram but not for Facebook. Also, carefully consider the hashtags which best encapsulate your content and give your post meaning. Consider using 1-2 branded hashtags across all content and 1-2 generic hashtags that relate to the image/video. Tapping into popular hashtags will ensure your content is more discoverable.

    Keep It Simple

Copy should be short and sharp. Get to the point quickly. And only have one clear message at a time.

    Post With Purpose

What are you looking to achieve? Engagement with your fans and followers or drive website traffic or generate bookings? Be clear on what you want to get out of each post and include a clear call-to-action such as ‘Click here to find out more’ or ‘Call us to book an appointment.’

    Switch It Up

Use video, boomerang, time-lapse, filters, captions on images and fun emojis to talk to your audience. Include a mix of colours and filters and test what works best.

    Events

Consider the use of Facebook Live and Instagram Stories for any special events or demonstrations, or even just to show your audience a fun day at ‘the office.’ People enjoy seeing the human element behind any business.

    Choose Your Platforms

You don’t need to be on every social media platform. Pick the platforms that are most relevant to your salon and the audience you are wanting to reach. Instagram and Facebook are your best bets.

    Engage Your Audience

Be active and engaging with your audience. Respond to clients and fans in a timely manner and be personable. Talk to someone the way you would if they came into a salon. Ask questions to engage and encourage conversation. If a client tags you in their photo, get involved in the discussion and show them some love too.

    Measure & Assess

We can’t stress this enough, measure and assess what works and what doesn’t. Take a small amount of time to analyse your content and learn from it. Try to take subjectivity out of the equation, just because you like a certain photo or video it doesn’t mean your community necessarily will. It comes back to your objective and what you’re trying to achieve. Always test, learn and amplify.

    Pay to Play

To get the most out of Facebook and Instagram, you should consider promoting your content to reach potential customers, through Facebook’s accurate and reliable targeting by age, gender, location, interests and behaviours. Remember, users don’t have to follow your brand to be served your ads. If you have a database of clients, you can easily retarget them with special offers and promotions and find like-minded clients, all with a few clicks.

    5 Top Social Media Turn-Offs!

The last thing you want is to do all this work only for it to have the opposite effect! So here’s a few tips about what NOT to do.

    1. Quality over quantity – Don’t spam your followers. One great video is better than ten shabby ones.

    2. Ignoring or not actively engaging with your community – Don’t shy away from talking to your customers.

    3. Being too sales focused – It’s as much about community as it is business and your customers want value from following you.

    4. Being expected – Reward followers with an experience they couldn’t otherwise get. It could be salon insights and featuring staff.

    5. Getting missed altogether – It depends on what you want to achieve but a paid strategy can help to top up your organic exposure.

  • The BaByliss Pro Barber: Barber Jazz

BaByliss Pro Barber, Educator, Master Barber and hair tattooing extraordinaire, Barber Jazz was centre stage at Hair Expo earlier this year for BaByliss Pro and Haircare Australia.

We were fortunate enough to quiz the Little Rebel Collective barber first hand on all things hair tattooing.

"Hair tattooing is a huge part of my business... It’s the perfect combination of two of my favourite things, drawing and cutting hair.”Jasmine Shipley

We’re all fascinated by the hair tattooing trend, can you tell us a little bit about how you got into it? “Hair tattooing for me started on a friend. We were always creating small lines in her hair and then one day she saw some of my drawings on paper and told me to get creative with her look. So, naturally I created one of my mandala designs and it started to gain a lot of attention on social media and people started asking me to create my hair tattoos on them,” begins Jasmine.

What are your top tools from the BaByliss Pro range for hair tattooing?

“V-Blade Trimmers with the T Blade Attachment are essential for sketching out my designs and I use my Volare Ferrari Clippers and 0.5 and 2.0 Attachments to perfectly fade out certain areas”. “I couldn’t work without my Volare Ferrari Clippers, they are cordless, light and so versatile. The perfect tool for precision on any hair type,” says Jasmine. What is one piece of advice you would give to a barber looking to branch out into hair tattooing? Jasmine finishes, “Practice makes perfect. Draw some designs on paper to familiarise yourself with the hand movements and different shapes and just give it a go.”

What sparked your interest in barbering and how did it evolve into the art of hair tattooing? “My interest in barbering started at a very young age. My grandmother was in the hair industry and during school holidays I would go to her salon, watch her all day and help out wherever I could. I really looked up to my grandmother, she was such an inspiration and I wanted to be just like her. So, I made it happen,” Jasmine recalls.

“As soon as I could, I started an apprenticeship and was helping out at a local salon until I was old enough to work full time. Once I finished my apprenticeship I moved into a salon that was renowned for short haircuts which meant about 80% of my clientele were looking for shorter cuts and I soon realised that I just loved creating those types of look,” says Jasmine.

“Hair tattooing for me started about 4 years ago, in the same barbershop where I first became recognised as a female barber specialising in short hair for females. Now, my hair tattooing is a huge part of my business and I absolutely love it! It’s the perfect combination of two of my favourite things, drawing and cutting hair,” Jasmine describes.

Where do you draw your inspiration from? “I absolutely love what I do. Being able to talk to my clients about their lives and hobbies enables me to enjoy ‘work’ so much more. When you can connect with your clients, come into a creative space every day, and work alongside your friends it’s really easy to feel inspired,” Jasmine says. “I also get a lot of my inspiration from social media too, there are just so many talented artists out there. Instagram provides a great platform for all hairdressers”.

  • Haircare After Dark: See Inside the VIP Party

Haircare Australia upheld their expectation to be the ultimate Hair Expo hosts in 2017, extending their hospitality from the exhibition to the dance floor and long into the night.

After hair, there’s one thing most hairdressers do well, and that’s party. It’s also no secret that Haircare Australia loves to host one, often taking a ‘come one, come all’ approach in a true celebration of the people and passion defining Australian hairdressing.

The Haircare Australia Hair Expo party has well and truly certified itself as the events largest offsite gathering. The Gauvins appreciate a good time, and ensure all in attendance have exactly that – drinks, live music, quality banter and this year, an impromptu styling competition among FAME Team members, Jamie Furlan, Marie Cain, Joe Ribera and Dion Lee Andrew.

Instigated by Jules Tognini, a dance off quickly evolved into live hair styling competition with each member grabbing the closest partygoer, dousing them in Evo and issuing the quickest transformation possible. We’re unsure who won, but INSTYLE Editor Cameron Pine’s sky-high Bieber-rendition was certainly something – nice one Jamie.

With almost 300 Expo revellers in attendance, there was no shortage of networking opportunities. From fellow salon owners and Prestige Partners to leading session stylists, Haircare staff and owners Jan and Geoff Gauvin, it was an open book of expert knowledge and endless experience for all to indulge.

“The annual Hair Expo party allows us to give back to our clients, spend time with them and say ‘thank you for their support,’” said HCA Creative Director, Lauren McCowan.

“I see it as a really important networking opportunity. At HCA we’re trying to create a community of like-minded salon professionals, it’s about a good time and meeting people that believe in the same principles we do. Building and protecting the industry,” she continued.

And it was certainly a community vibe beneath Sydney’s CBD; strangers became friends, a record bar tab was hit and despite tired Expo feet, the dance floor was alight into Monday’s earliest hours.

  • Hair Expo 2017 Wrap Up

With the growth of Australian hairdressing always top of mind, Haircare Australia views Hair Expo as an integral platform to inform, inspire and unite the industry - not only with a powerful stead of products and professionals - but with one another.

Occupying prime position on the exhibition floor, showcasing brands including Olaplex, BaByliss, Verb and Fabuloso Pro for customised coloured conditioners, Haircare welcomed record numbers in traffic and activity. Enjoying the opportunity to chat trials and triumphs with valued clientele and always taking the chance to listen and take on board valued feedback.

It was over in the education rooms however where the culture and influence of the company truly made its impact; hundreds of delegates walking away with fresh perspectives and technical insights as delivered by the likes of Guy Tang, The Schorem Barbers and Jules Tognini.

    Freevo

First to the stage was the much anticipated Freevo show. Hosting a line-up of Evo’s most influential artists in Lauren McCowan, Jules Tognini and Leonard Newton, the audience enjoyed the usual and always hilarious banter while consuming colour and creativity otherwise untold.

    Hair Expo Freevo

“We ultimately wanted the audience to walk away with the understanding that there are so many interpretations of what makes something cool, beautiful and modern. And this is the whole idea of the Freevo campaign - don’t be defined by what other people tell you, you should be,” said Lauren.

Lauren presented an intricate, ghetto inspired braided style followed by a shaved head adorned with bright-red hair balls fastened randomly and with ample effect. Lauren’s classic up-do made a statement before a blue-green wedge (wig) lifted to reveal yet another trending buzz cut.

A stand out from Lauren’s repertoire was a pastel rose gold-peach style on which the Creative Director glued a rainbow of precoloured finger waves.

“We coloured each weft with a custom Fab Pro mixation before soaking with Evo Gangsta Grip and finally layering with Evo Helmut Strong Hairspray. We did this on individual pieces of mesh and allowed them to set overnight. Now I’m sticking them on with eyelash glue which can be easily removed with Evo Love Touch Shine Spray,” divulged Lauren.

Leonard created a shoulder-length precision bob with a lick of blue and a subtle-yet striking triangle detail through the front, inspired by the Harajuku kids, the style was effortlessly cool and ready to walk from salon to street.

Working with the Evo Tyler Teasing Brush, Leonard demonstrated a series of universal techniques including back combing, back brushing and layering of product such as Evo Helmut Strong Hairspray, “for a glass like effect.”

While Lauren continued to illustrate the secrets to being a ‘360 degree hairdresser,’ Jules took to the stage with a vibrant copper canvas ready for reshaping.

“I want to create this restyle in real salon circumstances, without prep and with standard time limits,” started Jules. Borrowing from Milla Jovovich in Fifth Element, Jules travelled his cut from bulky to textured and youthful, working to materialise his model’s wicked personality, as well as his own.

“Freevo is less about being dictated-to by products or a corporate juggernaut and more about being a part of something. Hair shouldn’t be about a collection, or what’s hip and trending, it should be an expression of yourself and your client,” said Jules. But this should never deflect a great haircut. “Evo is never going to even out a bob or fix a haircut, but if you do a good haircut it will have your back, push and drive the style,” he said.

Jay was the genius behind the shifting colour palette, calling on his latest accomplice, Evo Fab Pro Black to create new, unseen levels of pastel.

“The current Fab Pro palette is the colour wheel, for example the chocolate exists at a level 5, and with the addition of black, this will help to add depth and achieve really dark dual-tones; beautiful deep pastels and greys,” said Jay.

“Especially as a semi-permanent, Evo Fab Pro Black is great to deepen and refresh darker tones, it’s really going to open up the capabilities of Fab Pro, in particular for cool interesting pastels,” commented Lauren.

    Schorem Barbers

Next to the spotlight were the world’s favourite barbers and creators of Reuzel, Leen and Bertus aka The Schorem Barbers.

The pair credited Vidal Sassoon as a hero inspiration, “because he changed the way we look at hair, he taught us to treat hair like a unique product, and that’s how we cut hair,” shared Bertus.

“We look at the natural fall of hair and see every person who walks into the shop as an individual, there are 8 billion people in the world, and they each have different hair.”

    Hair Expo Schorem

Bertus believes every product that is custom made for someone will fall correctly and made a metaphor from the tailored jacket. “When you travel with a customised jacket, and it’s been stuffed and pulled in and out of a backpack, and then you finally pull it out and put it on, it always falls correctly.”

Bertus translated this to clipper work, and encouraged the room to look at clippers as “a whole lot of scissors with a cord.” He educated on setting a baseline to secure length around the perimeter and how to use your body as a tool, always keeping the sternum right behind your work for 90 degree angles every time.

With the right angle on-side, The Schorem Barbers believe the most important area of the head (as it pertains to men’s hair) is where the ear is attached.

“You can shave everything forward or back from that point and it will look good,” said Bertus. A suggestion well and truly proved on-stage in a series of perfect pompadours fusing James Dean and Elvis, 2017-style.

Lastly, the lads advised on creating men’s hair to be proud of, a notion that shines from their persona to their product line, Reuzel.

“Try and do at least one haircut a day that you can be really proud of. Every time you give a client the best haircut possible, you give a little bit of yourself away, so don’t forget to be good to ‘you,’” said Bertus.

    Guy Tang for Olaplex

Further raising the spirits of Australian hairdressers was Instagram sensation and instigator of the global ‘Hair Besties Community,’ Guy Tang.

Back by popular demand, the hair colour hero presented a series of shimmering colour delicacies from rose gold to lilac and silver, each dissected with that addictive language symbiotic of Tang and his fans around the world.

    Hair Expo Guy Tang

Followed for his hair colour transformations and peerless pastels, Guy is all too familiar with ‘fear of the fade,’ and spoke about the importance of educating clients on expecting and enjoying the inevitable process. “I don’t know why everyone is so scared of fading, everything fades - life fades. My advice is to educate your clients accordingly, and don’t use the word fade, use the word evolve, ‘evolving into a beautiful smoky beige colour.’”

Guy believes toning on dry hair creates a more seamless result (as water molecules occupy the hair shaft) and encouraged his audience to up-sell the service.

“Call it glazing, dry-glossing or top-coating, it’s so important to tone on dry hair so if it’s a process that uses more time for a better result, then charge for it. It’s a service your clients will love as they will see you’re taking more time with them,” he said.

Big on under-promising and over-delivering, not a colour passes through Guy’s hands without the Olaplex touch, in particular when working with those harder to achieve tones such as silver. Guy reinforced the less is more approach with Olaplex, asking colourists to use only the specified amount as “it has a pH of 3.5, it’s very acidic.”

    Caterina Di Biase for Denman

    Hair Expo Caterina Di Biase

And, last to take the stage was two time Hair Expo Australian Hairdresser of the Year and two-time AHFA Hairdresser of the Year, Caterina Di Biase, enforcing the point that excellent prep forms the basis for key artistic editorial work. Caterina took to the stage. With the assistance of her Heading Out Creative Team, Caterina disseminated and reconstructed some of her key editorial looks for the crowd, sharing with them how she employs classic hairdresser’s tools, such as a Denman 7-row brush, to work and dress the hair prior to styling. Even simple tricks, like using different coloured cutting combs to provide contrast against light or dark hair can take away some of the guesswork and valuable time behind the scenes. The secret to success, according to Caterina, is combining the right brushes and tools to help bring the stylist’s vision to life.

    Sharon Blain for BaByliss

Hair Expo revellers were treated to daily demonstrations by the Queen of long hair styling, Sharon Blain, over at the BaByliss exhibition stand. Hairdressing royalty Sharon Blain claimed her throne as the Queen of long hair styling with daily hair demonstrations. Drawing in a keen crowd, Sharon captivated her audience as she shared some of her creative and inventive techniques using the BaByliss portfolio of tools, finishing her looks with the use of threading ribbons for styles that wowed.
