  • Fashion Week Street Style | Hair Inspiration

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week 2016 might have been and gone but it's certainly not forgotten. The fashion industry's event of the year saw our evo, Cloud Nine and Moroccanoil hair teams bring life to runway shows from Australian labels like Yeojin BaeC/MEO and Rebecca Vallance, but the models weren't the only stars of the show - Fashion Week wouldn't be the same without it's show-goers.

Here we've captured some of our favourite Fashion Week street style moments for some incredible hair inspiration. From ponytail's to the perfect wave, these styles ruled the streets.

Our experts give us their tips on how to achieve these looks to help us get ready for our next big event!

I'm liking the middle parts here and the fact the hair is smooth but not too straight and still has a touch of volume in the roots. To create this look, I would blow-dry the hair but if blowdrying is too much effort for a mid-week look, I would use the Cloud Nine Original or Cloud Nine Wide Iron to smooth the hair on a low temperature – nothing above 175 degrees. If you do choose to blow-dry the hair, smooth it after at a super-low temperature like 125 degrees. With hair this long, it’s really important to invest in a decent brush and get regular trims. Be gentle when brushing, don’t over process the hair or use high temperatures when heat styling.

Very few things beat a perfect
ponytail for me. This look is so sophisticated and too cool for school at the same time.  In order to create the perfect pony, I start with the perfect foundation, and for me that’s the Moroccanoil Treatment Light. I would then layer in the Moroccanoil Volumising Mousse to achieve the perfect texture and natural shine. A trick I picked up backstage at Fashion Week is to lightly spray the root area with Moroccanoil Heat Styling Protection and blow-dry into the direction of where you want to place the base of the ponytail. This gets rid of bubbles and gives you the ultimate sleek and shiny finish.

I like that this woman takes care of how she looks and clearly visits the salon regularly. To get this look I would blow-out the hair using evo’s mister fantastic and set with the Cloud Nine Waving Wand, finishing the look with evo builders paradise and a couple of drops of evo love perpetua. It’s all about the prep work if you want curls like this to last all day, be sure not to use a heavy shampoo or conditioner and always start with mister fantastic. It’s really important to set the hair at the right temperature too and leave curls to cool before dressing them out.

This look is effortless and minimal. It has a no fuss approach that suits the overall look. To recreate this look I would start by washing the hair with evo therapist shampoo and evo therapist conditioner and apply evo easy tiger straightening balm and blow dry the hair smooth with the evo bruce bristle brush. To keep hair this length looking its best you need to keep up your cuts as you don’t want it flicking out on the shoulders. I would recommend having a cut every 6-8 weeks to ensure the look is polished and maintained.

  • Get The Look | Cloud Nine Tools

Using the Cloud Nine Original Iron and  Micro Wand, Cloud Nine Ambassador, Renya Xydis creates two opposing, yet harmonious looks for the KitX Resort Collection.  The Original Iron was used to create a sleek androgynous look perfectly juxtaposed by wild, Helmut Newton inspired curls created with the Micro Wand.

”We wanted to create two looks that were completely different, yet worked so beautifully together. You have these big, untamed curls created with the Cloud Nine Micro Wand and then this straight and structured look created with the Cloud Nine Wide Iron. The two together, especially side-by-side work in perfect harmony with the clothes.” – Renya Xydis.

Learn how to recreate the looks from KitX's show with the Cloud Nine Tools here.

    Sleek & Straight

Step 1 - UC 1. Prep hair with evo salty dog salt spray concentrating on the roots and crown area. Blow dry the hair smooth in sections using a round ceramic brush. Focus on lifting at the roots to create volume around the crown.
Step 2 - UC 2. Avoiding the top section, smooth hair with the Cloud Nine Wide Iron set at 175 degrees. Spritzing each section with a mist of evo love touch shine spray.
Step 3 - UC 3. Take the top section of the hair and clip it out of the way, apply evo gangsta grip boning resin to the first side section using a tint brush. Use a wide-tooth comb like evo roy wide-tooth comb to comb the hair into place, repeat on the second side.
Step 4 - UC 4. Remove the top section and apply evo gangsta grip bonding resin through the top of the head, again, combing with evo roy, retaining volume and lift through the crown. Clip each section into place and diffuse rotating hot/cold, hot/ cold to set the gel. Once dry, remove clips.

    Untamed Curls

Step 1 - SS 1. Spray the hair with a light working hairspray like evo builders paradise and use the Cloud Nine Micro Wand to curl small sections of hair at a time. Pin each section to cool and set. As you move around the head, alternate the direction of the curls by wrapping the hair over and then under each time.
Step 2 - SS 2. Once every section has been curled, spray with hairspray to set. Once all the curls have completely cooled, remove each pin, loosen with your fingers.
Step 3 - SS 3. Comb through the curls with a wide tooth comb and style using your fingers for maximum volume.

  • evo salty dog, the Best Salt Spray.

Our favourite salt spray, evo salty dog takes out the top spot in Nylon Magazines Beauty Hit List as the Best Salt Spray of 2016! Here are some of our favourite ways to use evo salty dog to get the perfectly effortless hair - just in time for summer.

    1. If it’s volume at the roots you’re after - spray evo salty dog at the roots before a blow-dry and dry your hair upside down.

    2. For messy texture, you can spritz evo salty dog into dry hair and simply scrunch it.

    3. If it's year-round beach hair you're looking for.... simply curl your hair with a wand like the Cloud Nine Waving Wand, spray salty dog in and then comb your hair with a wide tooth comb and leave it to dry naturally.

    4. To create a natural wave in your hair without having to curl it before hand,  spray evo salty dog  into damp hair and then twist up into a high topknot and dry with a blow-dryer until dry. Release the top knot and shake your hair out and you will have perfect beach hair with little to no effort.

    5. If your hair is already dry and you just want a bit of a wave through the ends, spray the mid-lengths and ends of your hair with evo salty dog and do a tight plait before going to bed. Let it dry overnight and in the morning comb it out, giving you beautiful beach waves through the ends.

  • Salon Feature: Maurice Meade

Maurice Meade has the secret to success… teamwork!

Maurice is the creative and Rosemary is the business brain. And they don’t leave their kids behind either – with three involved on the floor, in marketing and payroll. Although 42 years in the game, there’s nothing old fashioned about Maurice Meade. Blending luxurious, funky and edgy, it’s a place where clients go to treat themselves.

Embrace your individuality, at Maurice Meade.

Claire, tell us about Maurice Meade philosophy.

“With 42 years under his belt, Maurice is what makes this brand so special. He knows all of the 150 staff names, as well as their mother’s names. People are the heart of Maurice Meade. You’re not just another number - you’re a part of the team. And this applies to both our staff and our clients. We get the best out of our people, and do the best for them.”

So, it sounds like you really go that extra mile…

“Yes, we do. From our apprentices to our experienced hairdressers, we invest in our people – continuously. We just flew in a motivational speaker from the United States, to inspire and motivate our team. We’re constantly at the forefront of our industry, pushing our team to be the best they can be… so, collectively, we’re the best for our clients.”

What’s the décor, vibe and feeling like at Maurice Meade?

“We have nine salons – six Maurice Meade, and three ME by Maurice Meade. Maurice Meade is our luxurious, beautifully fitted, “I just want to be spoiled” stores. While our concept stores, ME by Maurice Meade take an edgier, youthful, quirky approach. At ME, clients can get the “complete” experience –
getting their brows and nails done, as they wait for their hair
    to process.”

What’s the Maurice Meade point of difference?

“We’re the only salon in WA that can perform calligraphy cutting. We’ve got the rights to it. We look at every single client, personally. We don’t believe hairdressing should be a cookie-cutter production line. Hair is the only accessory we can’t take off… and like our clothes, it changes with each season.”

You’ve recently started using Cloud Nine in salon, how are you finding it?

“Ah, we love these tools! I love how Cloud Nine cares for your hair. We can vary what we’re doing and still create beautiful looks."

What’s new in hair this winter?

“Colour contouring. We’re now colouring hair to bring our the best of our clients features – by complimenting their face shapes and skin tones. We’re taking the same approach as we do for makeup, as nothing is standard. Colouring is now being done in a way that it’s never been done before. We’re also using fabuloso pro to personalise colours, it’s becoming a standard thing that our clients take home with them”.

Okay! What’s one thing you tell all of your new apprentices?

“Oh that’s a hard one. I start off by telling them that hairdressing isn’t just a job – it’s a lifestyle. It can take you anywhere in the world. You have the ability to change how someone feels about themselves, and this is powerful. It’s so much more than just hair. I always encourage them to think about each client as if it was their mum sitting in the chair… you’d give them special attention. Our clients deserve to be spoiled.”

Do you have any tips for guys with thick unruly hair?

Generally, this hair type tends to be dry and can get wiry and difficult to style - it also can get oily at the roots and dry on the ends. Using a great cleansing shampoo [try evo normal persons] to activate the scalp, remove build up and cleanse out dirt and oils is paramount, followed by a hydrating and smoothing conditioner that will moisturise and shut the cuticle.

    Daddy, daddy cool copyCH
evo daddy, daddy cool father's day gift boxes: evo normal persons and evo crop strutters OR evo box o' bollox.

    Your top hair cut recommendations?

For easy maintenance, a good haircut is designed to work with your texture, thin out any excess and bring out the best of your hair - and it doesn't need to be expensive either.

Thick hair? You cannot get away with random hack jobs for haircuts unless you want to spend all your time fighting to style it. Invest in a good hair cut.

Dense hair? Best to look at tailored pompadours and undercuts that leave you looking sharp but work with some length on the top for shape.

Curly hair? You can get away with more length as long as it is cut to bring out your curl - do not let a razor or thinning shears on your hair as it will exacerbate the frizz and make it more high maintenance to control.

What are your main styling tips?

Styling product that can go into your hair wet and dry will help control hair as soon as you step out of the shower and is an easy way to style unruly hair without taking up too much time [try Moroccanoil Original Treatment]. A good styling cream will also condense the hair and shut the cuticle without a heavy or greasy effect . A good curl control product or foundation cream [try evo liquid rollers] gives a great base to either air dry the hair, dry into shape or diffuse dry. You can then use a finishing product for your desired texture. Think a foundation product for wet to dry to set the tone and a finishing product for when the hair is dry to lock it in [try evo shebang-a-bang].

Do you have any tips for guys on how to use hair tonics?

Ask your barber or stylist, every hair is unique and you have to choose the product that fits your hair. The beauty of the Reuzel Tonics is that there is one for every hair and scalp type out there [try Reuzel Hair Tonic or Reuzel Grooming Tonic].

What tips do you have for removing product build-up and degreasing the hair?

If you want to remove the build-up of pomade and oil-based products use the new Reuzel Daily Conditioner on dry greasy hair, then add the Reuzel Scrub Shampoo and a little water, massage in, add water again, massage, rinse and wash with the Reuzel Daily Shampoo.

Favourite product for perfect hair every day?

Sea salt spray due to its ease of use, the texture it creates and the hold. It’s great for any type of hair and still easily malleable.

What is your top tip to get the best shave every time?

Keep an eye on the direction of the growth of hair. Make sure you shave with the grain not against. Keep the face hot and wet constantly.

How regularly should you aim to visit a barber?

For hair shorter than 1 inch on the sides I would recommend 3 weeks or less and anything between 1-3 inches then I recommend 4-6 weeks. I'd rarely advise longer than 6 weeks to keep up appearances.

What is your favourite product right now?

My favourite product would have to be evo haze, but if I could pick two, it would be evo salty dog with haze, best combo!

One piece of men's grooming advice you always give your clients?

Blowdry your hair into the shape that you desire [try evo mister fantastic] and then put product in. Putting product in wet hair is a really common problem amongst guys, they don’t seem to realise that as the hair dries it loses formation.

  • Mercedes Benz Fashion Week - Day 4

As the week neared to an end, we wrapped up our time at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week with the ever-iconic Ten Pieces.

    10_Pieces.053

Teaming up with designers, Maurice Terzini and Lucy Hinckfuss, Renya Xydis for Cloud Nine, and Aiden Xydis for evo®, created apocalyptic, Mad Max inspired looks to compliment the deconstructed knits and neutral tones in the collection.

"For the girls we worked with their natural texture to create an androgynous windswept look…like they’d been wandering the desert for days. When styling the models hair for the collection’s film and runway show, we created loose, deconstructed waves using The Cloud Nine Wand, adding texture and movement throughout random sections of hair." - Renya Xydis.

The hair team was a family affair, with Renya Xydis directing the women’s look for Cloud Nine while her son, Aiden Xydis of The Men’s Grooming Room styled the men’s look for evo®.

    10_Pieces.035
"Just like the collection’s muted tones, we wanted the guy’s hair to look quite matte. Using their natural shape as a base, we applied evo haze texturizing powder and worked it through the hair for that chalky, dusty sand storm look." - Aiden Xydis.

Keeping in theme, ten looks from the collection were showcased on ten models in head-to-toe layered block colours within the cavernous sound studios at Sydney’s iconic Fox Studios. The three and a half minute video filmed in the Australian desert served as a dramatic backdrop for the Ten Pieces MBFWA resort collection.

"Influenced by sportswear, our unisex approach for TEN PIECES is to create street-ready, interchangeable pieces for people who desire contemporary, yet comfortable clothing fitting for their busy lives." – Lucy Hinckfuss.

  • Mercedes Benz Fashion Week - Day 3

Day three of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week saw the Haircare Australia team welcome three huge across the day kicking things off with one of our favourite Adelaide-based brands, C/MEO.

    C/MEO

Inspired by the architectural lines of the C/MEO 2016 Resort collections, Lauren McCowan for evo® created two complimentary up-do’s for the brand’s second showcase on the MBFWA catwalk. Both looks were modern and wearable, highlighting the detailed necklines, collars and pastel colour palette in C/MEO’s ‘Momentum and Dimension’ collections.

    cameoC/MEO
“We worked closely together to define the C/MEO woman and how we would translate this throughout the runway hair looks. With the collection being an abstract take on classics, we decided there was no more classic hair-do than a bun, so we worked to deconstruct the traditional bun in a way that was worthy of the catwalk but still modern and wearable. The end result was slightly dishevelled but completely wearable look created with the magic of evo® styling products.” – Lauren Mccowan

Proving just why C/MEO is the label for on-trend pieces’ season after season, their MBFWA presentation solidified their place in Australian fashion today. Oversized shirts and razor-sharp suits were softened with feminine accents like cinched-in waists, layered pleats and floating hemlines that were presented in soft sorbet hues and clean neutrals.

    KitX

    kitxKitX

Renya Xydis created two contrasting styles for the KitX Resort 17 collection presentation at MBFWA 2016 - a sleek androgynous look perfectly juxtaposed by wild, Helmut Newton inspired curls to compliment the combination of colour, patterns and shapes seen throughout the brands’ debut MBFWA showcase.

“We wanted to create two looks that were completely different, yet worked so beautifully together. You have these big, untamed curls created with the Cloud Nine Micro Wand and then this straight and structured look created with the Cloud Nine Wide Iron. The two together, especially side-by-side work in perfect harmony with the clothes.” – Renya Xydis

Titled Flow, the range is a capsule collection and sees an Australian fashion favourite return to the runway. Held at the iconic Reservoir Gardens in Paddington, the venue continued to celebrate the notion of combining two opposing elements within nature – the tough venue balanced by ethereal pieces, geometric and shape combinations and of course sleek strands against wild curly halos.

"Like always, I started with the fabrics and looked at shapes – strips of fabric and then circles and rectangles and how they all came together to work in harmony with each other. Working with Renya, we wanted to create hair looks that mimicked this, with the two completely different styles complimenting each other, as well as the clothing.” – Kit Willow

    P.JAME

    pjameP.JAME

Teaming up with designers Dan Single and Bambi Northwood-Blyth, Hair Director Lauren McCowan for evo hair created enviably cool ‘bed hair’ for the launch of P.JAMÉ at Ivy Penthouse.

“The look needed to be equally as playful and seductive as the prints and designs throughout the collection. For the girls, we created voluminous ‘bed hair’ waves, building height with evo’s tyler teasing brush, builder’s paradise working hairspray and haze styling powder. For the guys we went for an ‘I woke up like this’ look. Keeping it quite relaxed, we enhanced their hairs’ natural texture by adding structure and volume with evo haze” – Lauren McCowan

Designing for all kinds of bedroom shenanigans, the collection is divided into two main categories, the ‘baller’ and the ‘boudoir’, which includes loose singlets and knee-length shorts in wild prints as well as silky rompers in classic black and white.

  • Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia - Day 1

As Australia’s fashion elite toast another successful start to Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia, we bring you a sneak peak of what’s been happening behind the scenes with the hair on day-two of our favourite week of the year.

Kicking things off, we were backstage with our amazing teams at Yeojin Bae, Albus Lumen, Aje and Rebecca Vallance.

    Yeojin Bae

    Yeojin BaeYeojin Bae

Teaming up with Australian designer Yeojin Bae, Hair Director Michele McQuillan for Cloud Nine created cool effortless waves, complimenting the elegant, simplistic collection with the help of the amazing Prema Creative Team.

“We wanted to create a look to contrast the structure and tailoring of the collection. The models hair was quite relaxed, keeping it off the face showcasing Yeojin’s unique necklines and the detailed lace fabrics. For the back of the hair we added shape and movement using the Cloud Nine Waving Wand creating an effortless ‘off duty’ wave for the polished cool girl.” – Michele McQuillan.

Celebrating 10 successful years in the fashion industry, Yeojin’s collection stayed true to her signature style – simplistic, elegant, colourful and relatable to the everyday woman.

    Albus Lumen

Lauren McCowan for Cloud Nine created a natural, effortlessly textured look for Albus Lumen’s debut at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia 2016. Complimenting Albus Lumen’s modern approach to minimalistic fashion – Cloud Nine Hair Director, Lauren McCowan worked with designer Marina Afonia to deliver 13 eclectic looks, each playing to the models natural hair texture. Embodying the relaxed spirit of Albus Lumen’s simple, classic and contemporary style, the easy-to-wear collection was perfectly paired with effortless waves and textured crop looks which Lauren created using the Cloud Nine Irons.

“The overall concept was to enhance each girl’s natural texture, adding volume, shape and shine. We achieved multiple looks using the Cloud Nine Original Iron and Cloud Nine Micro Iron depending on the hair length, on various heat settings - highlighting the versatility of the tools alongside the Albus Lumen collection.” – Lauren McCowan

Showcasing the latest trends - long layers, wrap skirts and lace-up necklines, Afonia’s collection offers understated luxury pieces using sumptuous natural fibres in a neutral palette. Inspired by the European summer and style, the aesthetic of the label is drawn from a sense of effortlessness.

    Rebecca Vallance

    vallanceRebecca Valance

The Rebecca Vallance Resort Collection was influenced by old Hollywood on holidays in Palm Beach, capturing the sportiness of the day, country club style and evening soirees. Violet Sainsbury, Moroccanoil Hair Director for Moroccanoil created a look built around the tailoring and luxurious fabrications used throughout Rebeccca’s collection.

“For Rebecca we created a luxury blow-dry with subtle movement, swept behind the ears allowing for a polished look that wasn’t over-styled. We used the Moroccanoil Light Treatment and Styling Gel Medium to provide the right amount of hold with-out weighing the hair down.” - Violet Sainsbury

    Aje

Teaming up with Aje, Lauren McCowan for Moroccanoil created an elegant yet understated look Aje’s Resort 2016 Collection. A label synonymous with effortless glamour, tough femininity and dishevelled elegance, the hair look brought out the natural texture of each girl on the runway, to bring out their individuality and beauty while still keeping the nonchalant elegance that embodies the ‘Aje girl’. Lauren used the Moroccanoil Treatment to beautifully clean hair to achieve movement and soft texture for a slight separation and lustre.

“Whenever I work with Aje as hair director, I always take inspiration directly from the collection and the brand itself- they are the masters of dishevelled elegance, and their ability to make the most embellished and structured pieces’ meld with chic nonchalance means endless inspiration when applying those ideas to hair. Always a pleasure.” – Lauren McCowan

Love Amber Heard's hair from The Golden Globe Awards? We do! Neuma designer, Jin Bang, walks you through getting Amber's look with a little help from Neuma.

"If you know the hair you're working with, there is the perfect Neuma product to help you achieve your end result" -Jin Bang
    amber-heard-product
    1. Know what kind of hair you are working with. Amber Heard has medium texture with a little frizz and wave which makes the perfect texture for this updo.
    2. On wet hair, use neuStyling mousse on roots only, around front hairline and top/round of the head. Then use neuVolume blow out mist from mid shaft to ends. Combine neuStyling smoothing cream with four drops of neuRepair argan oil, apply cocktail mixture for moisture and hair density expansion on ends as well. Then blow dry hair.
    3. Using a 1 inch to 1.5 inch Marcel curing iron, spray neuControl medium spray from roots to ends. Then curl hair. Set with flat pins using classing perm sections.
    4. Once hair is all pinned up, let hair sit in pin curl set until hair cools off.
    5. Using the art of a 'visual tease', start at hair line and tease with strong volume. As you work back to the top of the hair line at the bottom, use less volume.
    6. Use a hair tie or rubber band, section off the back of hair and make a loose bun leaving ends of hair frazzled and out for a soft, loose effect. Connect all parts of the hair, starting with mid to low areas near front of hair line, connecting front hair line last. Use French pins only, not english pins, so connections are soft and natural.
    7. After hair is in place, spray neuControl hairspray (non-aerosole) or neuControl firm. Finish with neuSmooth illuminating mist for shine.
