Education

  • Renya Xydis | A Little Respect

Renya Xydis chats Instagram, rising to the top, the reality of respect and her upcoming education workshop, The Sessions.

Renya Xydis, the pink haired, (usually) red-lipped dynamo that elevated the Sydney salon landscape and set standards for ‘session’ in Australia. She has built a cult following in Valonz Haircutters and propelled profiles in the likes of Travis Balcke – Eugene Souleiman’s right hand man.

Cloud Nine Ambassador, celebrity stylist, savvy business woman and the driver of trend defining Instagram accounts @sydneysbesthaircolourists and @valonzhaircutters, it’s a busy, burgeoning life for Renya Xydis – one punctuated with a stream of timeless beauty; moments that make pictures to last a lifetime.

But it hasn’t been all high times and hero hair moments. While today you’ll find her working the fashion week circuit from New York to Paris, settling the likes of Cate Blanchett into her chair or creating on-set for VOGUE and Marie Claire, what people don’t see are the years of sacrifice and hard work Renya has invested to manifest her life today. We all have to start somewhere, and for Renya, reality is the key.

“My best advice for younger artists realizing their creativity? Don’t pick up a copy of Italian VOGUE and think you can create that. They spent thousands of dollars to get that look and then you’ve got hours of post production,” Renya begins.

“There is so much happening on Instagram, we have access to the work and minds of the world’s best creatives, use it, consume it … and learn your lighting! Google your favourite photographers and various lighting styles, this generation of hairdressers don’t realize how lucky they are, it’s so easy to do your research now,” believes Renya.

For Renya, as much as she loves Instagram – its universal connection, and what the platform can do for a profile and business – a new urge for instant gratification is stimulating a warped belief that, as quickly as we can access imagery, we can master the mind the behind it.

“What young stylists don’t understand is that in the case of so many styles we see in Italian VOGUE, i-D or the latest Prada campaign, the hair director and/or creative team has spent months or even years on making that moment happen. There are so many little secrets behind these looks and quite often, they’re the result of a series of mistakes that the hair director will run with,” Renya divulges.

Renya suggests connecting with local fashion schools such as FBI, attending their annual fashion parades, taking note of emerging designers and, ultimately, collaborating with them. And the same principle applies to makeup and photography. The likes of MAC Cosmetics and Napoleon Perdis have a budding collective of artists just waiting to get creative and gather the experience they need to be great. When it comes to photography, Renya suggests approaching the assistants of the photographer’s assistants, “just be there on-set and help out, that’s how you meet and connect with people … but put your phone away, it’s so disheartening to everyone.”

    Renya Xydis

“Just be humble, and be respectful. Take a look at the situation that you’re in. If you’re allowed backstage or at a shoot, really appreciate it, it’s someone else’s dream and hard work and they’re giving that to you,” says Renya.

“No other seminar or workshop can educate you on mastering the nature, pace and precision of backstage or on set, and it’s free! Think about it, every other course, cutting, up-styling, you have to pay for.”

Sharing and integrity drive all that Renya applies herself to, and her Instagram accounts are no exception. For Renya, a successful Instagram feed is one that speaks of you as an individual and, where hairdressers are concerned, an artist.

“Everything I put on Instagram is reflective of what I would want to learn and how I would like to look,” she begins.

“Don’t sway to other people’s Instagram accounts, don’t copy. So many accounts are all about the same, fly-away texture and standard colour … this looks like a piece of toast to me, it looks bland.”

Renya is a passionate advocate for the many colours, ethnicities and interpretations of beauty that we, as the human race, represent, and believes that with our real and virtual access to all corners of the world, there’s no excuse to lead a boring feed.

“You’ve got to bring a bit of magic, look at your feed, look at your last 12 images, have you got versatility, have you got colour in there saying ‘I’ve got a personality?’ I see fun, vivacious girls with bland Instagram accounts - that’s not showing off their personality,” continues Renya.

“If you love the beach, put that on there, if you love fashion, feature some of that too but just make sure those posts occupy 1 % of your feed, and the remaining 99% hair, what you believe in.”

It is all this and more that Renya will discuss in an intimate, open format at the upcoming Cloud Nine, The Sessions workshop. The morning will see Renya share her secrets to building and maintaining a successful salon, all while growing a creative career and engaging clientele.

“I want participants to walk away with a strong understanding of how to engage and grow the right clientele for them, their team and salon culture,” says Renya.

“And it’s so important for salon owners to nourish their own creativity whilst running and building a successful business. For some this may seem a difficult task, so I want to provide insight on how to make this a reality – a reality that will build culture, team morale and have a direct impact on the salon’s bottom line.”

An expert in salon marketing and brand culture in the digital realm, Renya will educate on building a strong following and will guide participants on creating a piece of content, ready for market, on the day.

“I’m really looking forward to guiding each participant through the process of creating a powerful and directional piece of content ready for social media. We’re going to explore the best apps, techniques and timings to get the most from digital ready content and really drive a salon forward,” she says.

The Sessions Workshop will take place on Tuesday, 15th August. Click here to secure your spot.

  • Hair Expo 2017 Wrap Up

With the growth of Australian hairdressing always top of mind, Haircare Australia views Hair Expo as an integral platform to inform, inspire and unite the industry - not only with a powerful stead of products and professionals - but with one another.

Occupying prime position on the exhibition floor, showcasing brands including Olaplex, BaByliss, Verb and Fabuloso Pro for customised coloured conditioners, Haircare welcomed record numbers in traffic and activity. Enjoying the opportunity to chat trials and triumphs with valued clientele and always taking the chance to listen and take on board valued feedback.

It was over in the education rooms however where the culture and influence of the company truly made its impact; hundreds of delegates walking away with fresh perspectives and technical insights as delivered by the likes of Guy Tang, The Schorem Barbers and Jules Tognini.

    Freevo

First to the stage was the much anticipated Freevo show. Hosting a line-up of Evo’s most influential artists in Lauren McCowan, Jules Tognini and Leonard Newton, the audience enjoyed the usual and always hilarious banter while consuming colour and creativity otherwise untold.

    Hair Expo Freevo

“We ultimately wanted the audience to walk away with the understanding that there are so many interpretations of what makes something cool, beautiful and modern. And this is the whole idea of the Freevo campaign - don’t be defined by what other people tell you, you should be,” said Lauren.

Lauren presented an intricate, ghetto inspired braided style followed by a shaved head adorned with bright-red hair balls fastened randomly and with ample effect. Lauren’s classic up-do made a statement before a blue-green wedge (wig) lifted to reveal yet another trending buzz cut.

A stand out from Lauren’s repertoire was a pastel rose gold-peach style on which the Creative Director glued a rainbow of precoloured finger waves.

“We coloured each weft with a custom Fab Pro mixation before soaking with Evo Gangsta Grip and finally layering with Evo Helmut Strong Hairspray. We did this on individual pieces of mesh and allowed them to set overnight. Now I’m sticking them on with eyelash glue which can be easily removed with Evo Love Touch Shine Spray,” divulged Lauren.

Leonard created a shoulder-length precision bob with a lick of blue and a subtle-yet striking triangle detail through the front, inspired by the Harajuku kids, the style was effortlessly cool and ready to walk from salon to street.

Working with the Evo Tyler Teasing Brush, Leonard demonstrated a series of universal techniques including back combing, back brushing and layering of product such as Evo Helmut Strong Hairspray, “for a glass like effect.”

While Lauren continued to illustrate the secrets to being a ‘360 degree hairdresser,’ Jules took to the stage with a vibrant copper canvas ready for reshaping.

“I want to create this restyle in real salon circumstances, without prep and with standard time limits,” started Jules. Borrowing from Milla Jovovich in Fifth Element, Jules travelled his cut from bulky to textured and youthful, working to materialise his model’s wicked personality, as well as his own.

“Freevo is less about being dictated-to by products or a corporate juggernaut and more about being a part of something. Hair shouldn’t be about a collection, or what’s hip and trending, it should be an expression of yourself and your client,” said Jules. But this should never deflect a great haircut. “Evo is never going to even out a bob or fix a haircut, but if you do a good haircut it will have your back, push and drive the style,” he said.

Jay was the genius behind the shifting colour palette, calling on his latest accomplice, Evo Fab Pro Black to create new, unseen levels of pastel.

“The current Fab Pro palette is the colour wheel, for example the chocolate exists at a level 5, and with the addition of black, this will help to add depth and achieve really dark dual-tones; beautiful deep pastels and greys,” said Jay.

“Especially as a semi-permanent, Evo Fab Pro Black is great to deepen and refresh darker tones, it’s really going to open up the capabilities of Fab Pro, in particular for cool interesting pastels,” commented Lauren.

    Schorem Barbers

Next to the spotlight were the world’s favourite barbers and creators of Reuzel, Leen and Bertus aka The Schorem Barbers.

The pair credited Vidal Sassoon as a hero inspiration, “because he changed the way we look at hair, he taught us to treat hair like a unique product, and that’s how we cut hair,” shared Bertus.

“We look at the natural fall of hair and see every person who walks into the shop as an individual, there are 8 billion people in the world, and they each have different hair.”

    Hair Expo Schorem

Bertus believes every product that is custom made for someone will fall correctly and made a metaphor from the tailored jacket. “When you travel with a customised jacket, and it’s been stuffed and pulled in and out of a backpack, and then you finally pull it out and put it on, it always falls correctly.”

Bertus translated this to clipper work, and encouraged the room to look at clippers as “a whole lot of scissors with a cord.” He educated on setting a baseline to secure length around the perimeter and how to use your body as a tool, always keeping the sternum right behind your work for 90 degree angles every time.

With the right angle on-side, The Schorem Barbers believe the most important area of the head (as it pertains to men’s hair) is where the ear is attached.

“You can shave everything forward or back from that point and it will look good,” said Bertus. A suggestion well and truly proved on-stage in a series of perfect pompadours fusing James Dean and Elvis, 2017-style.

Lastly, the lads advised on creating men’s hair to be proud of, a notion that shines from their persona to their product line, Reuzel.

“Try and do at least one haircut a day that you can be really proud of. Every time you give a client the best haircut possible, you give a little bit of yourself away, so don’t forget to be good to ‘you,’” said Bertus.

    Guy Tang for Olaplex

Further raising the spirits of Australian hairdressers was Instagram sensation and instigator of the global ‘Hair Besties Community,’ Guy Tang.

Back by popular demand, the hair colour hero presented a series of shimmering colour delicacies from rose gold to lilac and silver, each dissected with that addictive language symbiotic of Tang and his fans around the world.

    Hair Expo Guy Tang

Followed for his hair colour transformations and peerless pastels, Guy is all too familiar with ‘fear of the fade,’ and spoke about the importance of educating clients on expecting and enjoying the inevitable process. “I don’t know why everyone is so scared of fading, everything fades - life fades. My advice is to educate your clients accordingly, and don’t use the word fade, use the word evolve, ‘evolving into a beautiful smoky beige colour.’”

Guy believes toning on dry hair creates a more seamless result (as water molecules occupy the hair shaft) and encouraged his audience to up-sell the service.

“Call it glazing, dry-glossing or top-coating, it’s so important to tone on dry hair so if it’s a process that uses more time for a better result, then charge for it. It’s a service your clients will love as they will see you’re taking more time with them,” he said.

Big on under-promising and over-delivering, not a colour passes through Guy’s hands without the Olaplex touch, in particular when working with those harder to achieve tones such as silver. Guy reinforced the less is more approach with Olaplex, asking colourists to use only the specified amount as “it has a pH of 3.5, it’s very acidic.”

    Caterina Di Biase for Denman

    Hair Expo Caterina Di Biase

And, last to take the stage was two time Hair Expo Australian Hairdresser of the Year and two-time AHFA Hairdresser of the Year, Caterina Di Biase, enforcing the point that excellent prep forms the basis for key artistic editorial work. Caterina took to the stage. With the assistance of her Heading Out Creative Team, Caterina disseminated and reconstructed some of her key editorial looks for the crowd, sharing with them how she employs classic hairdresser’s tools, such as a Denman 7-row brush, to work and dress the hair prior to styling. Even simple tricks, like using different coloured cutting combs to provide contrast against light or dark hair can take away some of the guesswork and valuable time behind the scenes. The secret to success, according to Caterina, is combining the right brushes and tools to help bring the stylist’s vision to life.

    Sharon Blain for BaByliss

Hair Expo revellers were treated to daily demonstrations by the Queen of long hair styling, Sharon Blain, over at the BaByliss exhibition stand. Hairdressing royalty Sharon Blain claimed her throne as the Queen of long hair styling with daily hair demonstrations. Drawing in a keen crowd, Sharon captivated her audience as she shared some of her creative and inventive techniques using the BaByliss portfolio of tools, finishing her looks with the use of threading ribbons for styles that wowed.

    Hair Expo Sharon Blain

After a jam-packed weekend, Haircare Australia is fondly reflecting on their mission to inform, inspire and unite the industry. Now, until next year!

  • Olaplex: The secret to Permanent, Healthy Beach Waves with Guy Tang

Permanent beach waves are the new anthem for anyone who has curling wands, salt water sprays, and/or texture creating flat irons within their regular hair regimen. Let’s face it, it takes a lot of work to look that effortless and to wake up in the morning in true “I Woke Up Like This” fashion, sounds only but a dream... except with perming, it isn’t.

The thought of 24/7 beachy waves sounds appealing... but what about the damage caused to the hair through the process? Or even yet, color treated hair that faces the fact of extreme breakage in order to alter it’s texture?

Any hairdresser will tell you it’s nearly impossible to perm previously lightened or colored hair because the risk of damage is far too high. This has been the case, until Olaplex. With this new chemistry not only comes the ability to push the hair further than ever before, but the ability to make history in successfully perming pre-lightened, colored hair. The end result? Healthy, shiny, gorgeously textured hair– without compromising.

Back to the ‘do– we’ve come a long way since the sky high, tight curled 1980s perm. Grease: Live! actress and #901Girl, Julianne Hough, nearly broke the internet proving just that after revealing her stunningly beachy Olaplex Perm. The new trend shows no signs of stopping and who better than the ultimate hair bestie, Guy Tang, to show the way!

Guy’s performed this service on a client who is currently going through hoops in beauty school. You know what that means– her hair also doubles as an experimental canvas. In fact, just hours prior to the perm, she had a color correction done! Not only does her hair look gorgeously ombréd, but she has bouncy, effortless beach waves sure to provoke hair envy wherever she goes.

  • Recreate Amber Heard's Messy Pomp with Neuma

"If you know the hair you're working with, there is the perfect Neuma product to help you achieve your end result" -Jin Bang
    amber-heard-product
    1. Know what kind of hair you are working with. Amber Heard has medium texture with a little frizz and wave which makes the perfect texture for this updo.
    2. On wet hair, use neuStyling mousse on roots only, around front hairline and top/round of the head. Then use neuVolume blow out mist from mid shaft to ends. Combine neuStyling smoothing cream with four drops of neuRepair argan oil, apply cocktail mixture for moisture and hair density expansion on ends as well. Then blow dry hair.
    3. Using a 1 inch to 1.5 inch Marcel curing iron, spray neuControl medium spray from roots to ends. Then curl hair. Set with flat pins using classing perm sections.
    4. Once hair is all pinned up, let hair sit in pin curl set until hair cools off.
    5. Using the art of a 'visual tease', start at hair line and tease with strong volume. As you work back to the top of the hair line at the bottom, use less volume.
    6. Use a hair tie or rubber band, section off the back of hair and make a loose bun leaving ends of hair frazzled and out for a soft, loose effect. Connect all parts of the hair, starting with mid to low areas near front of hair line, connecting front hair line last. Use French pins only, not english pins, so connections are soft and natural.
    7. After hair is in place, spray neuControl hairspray (non-aerosole) or neuControl firm. Finish with neuSmooth illuminating mist for shine.

  • Reuzel Australia Brings the Schorem Barbers Down Under

From the heart of Rotterdam, Scumbag barbers Leen and Bertus hit Australian shores to bring us their Cute and Cuddly Creatures Tour. In a two-week long tour of Australia and New Zealand, the barbers shared their somewhat unconventional yet amazingly brilliant approach to all things business and barbering. While providing us with an insight into their world, we shared a bit of good old Aussie culture and gave them an insight into our flourishing barbering scene.

Kicking things off with a bang, we took the renowned barbers on a tour of Melbourne’s top barbershops in a bid to showcase the different styles of barbering; the standard of which left even these great barbers humbled. Throughout the tour, Leen and Bertus visited many barbershops, giving them the ability to experience the Australian barber culture first hand and see how the Schorem and Reuzel legacy is extending across the globe.

    Reuzel Australia Schorem Barbers Tour

Amongst parties, brewery visits, sightseeing, tattoos and barber battles, the Schorem Boys put on four impressive live shows in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Auckland. With four incredible venues and performances, each audience was given an insight into the spirt of barbering according to Leen and Bertus  An eclectic mix of classic style and boyish banter, there were no better people to depict such an interesting tale. Taking it back, the boys, mainly Bertus, the chattier of the two, gave us glimpse into what life is really like at Schorem. From chewing the fat with clients to the intricate detailing that went into the creation of Schorem, there was no stone left unturned.

From the outset, we were told that the night wasn't about the haircuts and any talk of ‘hair shows’ was forbidden. Leen and Bertus are firm believers that what they do isn't worthy of a show, all they want to do is share their story and passion for providing men with a place to escape, a place that brings back the essence of being social. The most basic ideal portrayed throughout the shows was that good old fashioned conversation needs to be at the heart of every barbershop. “Everyone these days is on social media, but to me that’s anti-social. Sure, people come to us for a haircut but its social interaction they need” claims Bertus. If it’s social interaction you’re looking for then Bertus is your man. The self-proclaimed ‘creative one’ immerses himself into chatting with his clients, and in the case of the Cute and Cuddly Creatures Tour, audiences of 200 plus. While Leen powers through a number of cuts on stage, amidst the jokes and storytelling Bertus is able to complete one. It’s clear to see who the businessman in the relationship is, making a truly perfect pairing.

If you can DREAM it, you can DO it...What can we say, it's hard to believe where that little barbershop brought us,...

With the help of a few carefully placed props, a few beers and the hilarious improvisation from the Scumbags themselves, the audience were given the chance to experience that famous Rotterdam barbershop for themselves. Everything about the shows exuded authenticity, in the same way their carefully created shop and range of pomades do. In a room full of hairdressers and barbers alike, inspiration was rife, if not from the cutting, then from the passion that brought Schorem to fruition.  The inspiration of building success from something you love.  The word Schorem roughly translates to ‘assholes’ in Dutch, yet the dedication and professionalism this dynamic duo show is more genius than ‘asshole’ like. Leen and Bertus are the first to admit that they’re not everyone’s cup of tea but they embrace it. Their mission is to be the most authentic versions of themselves and hope that they inspire at least one person to follow their passion and love what they do. A mission that they have proven to be hugely successful in so far.
