  • Adelaide Fashion Festival Look Step by Step: Tribal Texture

Using evo and Cloud Nine, Atilio Dusa and the clip joint creative team created this tribal twist on a Geisha bun achieving a minimal yet textured finish.

    1. Prep hair by using evo mister fantastic and blow drying using the pete paddle brush, then smooth the cuticle using Cloud Nine Wide or Original iron on a low heat.
    2. Section off the front top and sides of the hair leaving the back down. Using your evo bradford bristle brush, brush the hair from the top section in an upwards direction into a high ponytail. Using hat elastic, wrap around the base of the pony very tightly and tie off.
    3. Repeat same steps for second section through the back of the head bringing it up to join the top pony. (this can also be split up into a few sections if hair is thick).
    4. Using evo builders paradise working spray to smooth and fly always. Again using evo bradford bristle brush, brush a section of hair through the top front hairline, (between rescession lines) against the direction of the ponytail to create a textured, fly away effect. Then light spray more builders paradise spray to set.
    5. For the high bun, spray evo builders paradise into the pony and start to twist the hair from bottom to top and bring the twist back down to the base and pin tightly to base with fringe and bobby pins. Slightly pull bun apart to loosen and create texture but keep as much height as possible.
    6. Finish but doing a final spray of evo builders paradise

  • Olaplex vs Colorphlex: Olaplex Tested Again

Since Olaplex revolutionised the hair industry in January 2015, a number of products have been released spuriously claiming to achieve results similar Olaplex.

We can say confidently that despite these claims, none have the same unique, patented chemistry that allows Olaplex to repair and rebuild the bonds in damaged hair. That simply means that none are able to repair hair that has been damaged by chemical, heat or mechanical means.

But don’t take our word for it. The highly respected and fiercely independent American Board of Certified Hair Colorists recently performed their own tests to compare Olaplex with colorpHlex and b3 Brazilian Bond Builder.

To perform the test, the Board bleached four identical hair swatches with Blondor and 40 volume for 50 minutes, for maximum effect, with each manufacturer’s instructions being followed precisely. The comparison photograph below was taken after four shampoos, with colorpHlex on the left, followed by mineral oil, b3 Brazilian Bond Builder and finally Olaplex on the right.

Olaplex Comparison - Olaplex vs Colorphlex Vs Brazilian Bond Builder

After comparing Olaplex with colorpHlex, mineral oil and B3 Brazilian Bond Builder the review of the ABCC was as follows:

“But after the fourth shampoo, it was clear that the other products were not holding up and seemed to prove to be nothing more than oil and silicone. They were only temporarily coating the hair thus creating an immediate shine, but unable to build or link broken bonds with any degree of quality. The hair felt dry and fragile. At best, they would be better served to call it an additive for shine. Anything more is a far stretch of the imagination. The Olaplex sample maintained its integrity and was the clear winner. We also performed similar tests on live models and Olaplex was always noticeably and significantly superior. The more compromised the hair was, the more Olaplex outperformed the rest.”

The results are clear. What does this mean for your salon? Well, if you’re on the fence, we encourage you to try out your own swatch test, conduct your own review and compare the results for yourself!

  • Reuzel Australia Brings the Schorem Barbers Down Under

From the heart of Rotterdam, Scumbag barbers Leen and Bertus hit Australian shores to bring us their Cute and Cuddly Creatures Tour. In a two-week long tour of Australia and New Zealand, the barbers shared their somewhat unconventional yet amazingly brilliant approach to all things business and barbering. While providing us with an insight into their world, we shared a bit of good old Aussie culture and gave them an insight into our flourishing barbering scene.

Kicking things off with a bang, we took the renowned barbers on a tour of Melbourne’s top barbershops in a bid to showcase the different styles of barbering; the standard of which left even these great barbers humbled. Throughout the tour, Leen and Bertus visited many barbershops, giving them the ability to experience the Australian barber culture first hand and see how the Schorem and Reuzel legacy is extending across the globe.

    Reuzel Australia Schorem Barbers Tour

Amongst parties, brewery visits, sightseeing, tattoos and barber battles, the Schorem Boys put on four impressive live shows in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Auckland. With four incredible venues and performances, each audience was given an insight into the spirt of barbering according to Leen and Bertus  An eclectic mix of classic style and boyish banter, there were no better people to depict such an interesting tale. Taking it back, the boys, mainly Bertus, the chattier of the two, gave us glimpse into what life is really like at Schorem. From chewing the fat with clients to the intricate detailing that went into the creation of Schorem, there was no stone left unturned.

Reuzel Australia Schorem Barbers Tour 2

From the outset, we were told that the night wasn't about the haircuts and any talk of ‘hair shows’ was forbidden. Leen and Bertus are firm believers that what they do isn't worthy of a show, all they want to do is share their story and passion for providing men with a place to escape, a place that brings back the essence of being social. The most basic ideal portrayed throughout the shows was that good old fashioned conversation needs to be at the heart of every barbershop. “Everyone these days is on social media, but to me that’s anti-social. Sure, people come to us for a haircut but its social interaction they need” claims Bertus. If it’s social interaction you’re looking for then Bertus is your man. The self-proclaimed ‘creative one’ immerses himself into chatting with his clients, and in the case of the Cute and Cuddly Creatures Tour, audiences of 200 plus. While Leen powers through a number of cuts on stage, amidst the jokes and storytelling Bertus is able to complete one. It’s clear to see who the businessman in the relationship is, making a truly perfect pairing.

If you can DREAM it, you can DO it...What can we say, it's hard to believe where that little barbershop brought us,...

With the help of a few carefully placed props, a few beers and the hilarious improvisation from the Scumbags themselves, the audience were given the chance to experience that famous Rotterdam barbershop for themselves. Everything about the shows exuded authenticity, in the same way their carefully created shop and range of pomades do. In a room full of hairdressers and barbers alike, inspiration was rife, if not from the cutting, then from the passion that brought Schorem to fruition.  The inspiration of building success from something you love.  The word Schorem roughly translates to ‘assholes’ in Dutch, yet the dedication and professionalism this dynamic duo show is more genius than ‘asshole’ like. Leen and Bertus are the first to admit that they’re not everyone’s cup of tea but they embrace it. Their mission is to be the most authentic versions of themselves and hope that they inspire at least one person to follow their passion and love what they do. A mission that they have proven to be hugely successful in so far.

“He adored New York City. He idolised it all out of proportion…No, make that: he romanticised it all out of proportion. Yes. To him, no matter what the season was, this was still a town that existed in black and white and pulsated to the great tunes of George Gershwin”.
